As a handwriting specialist, I'd like to point out that the fastest and clearest handwriters avoid cursive. Research shows that highest-speed highest-legibility handwriters strongly tend to: /a/ join only some of the letters in a word (making the easiest joins and skipping the rest), and /b/ use print-like (rather than cursive-like) letter-shapes wherever these two shapes of a letter notably disagree. Tell this to cursive teachers -- you'll find a research citation and other related info on my site at http://www.HandwritingThatWorks.com -- and watch them freak out!

Ghotit (www.Ghotit.com) offers unique writing and reading online services for people who suffer from dyslexia, dysgraphia or people who are not native-English speakers. Ghotit’s first service is an online context sensitive spell checker.

What people have to say:

My god I have been look for this for all-my life, help that understands me. I write with a dictionary and thesaurus and some times cant even find the word looking for. I could not hold back the tears from the emotion then when I worked out how helpful this spellchecker will be for me.

• i really like it and i'm so glad i found it!! it will really help with my homework etc and my teachers wont get angry at me annymore!!

• Thank you for contacting us with your product. I tinkered with the spell checker for sometime this morning, entering common mistakes that our dyslexic students (and ADD) students make in spelling. I must say that I am extremely impressed with your product and would certainly like to further evaluate it with our students over the next several weeks.

• that spell checker is SO good, its actually waaay better than microsoft because it tells you the reasen why you are usuing the correct word. i really like it, its really good!!

I don't think this is true at all. While I don't think it is necessary to master cursive I think it is key in finding your personal handwriting identity. How could we expect young children with sloppy writing to grow past chicken scratch they can't read themselves without experimenting with other styles of font. Many seem to write with a mix of print and cursive...what was the stat? 75%? Font is used for expressing more connotation than the words themselves express.

Changes for the future:

Print on the dotted line...
Classes required for deciphering historical documents (and Mom's old letters)...Voice recognition software classes takes over typing classes... throw away the mouse and keyboard...

Ummm, i don't use history dates, algebra equations, and French in my everyday life, but I still write cursive! It's faster!

But I am VERY, VERY happy I learned ALL of those things! And why do I have to take a speaking class in college?

To the writer of the 4th comment,

I believe teachers should spend more time on basic grammar principles than on messy handwriting. Also, individual writing style says little to nothing about personal intelligence or creativity, just that one's penmanship may be a little eccentric. The teaching of cursive to our young people, unlike math or history, does not directly teach them problem solving or the use of logic. If anything, cursive teaches our children to give up, as seen in the 85% of students who do so immediately. Cursive may be whimsical, but this does not make it a necessary tool for young people's lives. However, the fine arts, math, science, history, english, and the understanding of a foreign language are. Learning cursive is not "bad" for kids, it just is not necessary.

To the writer of the second comment,

My great-grandfather wrote beautiful calligraphy, and I must say, I was a little jealous of that. I am, sadly, not jealous of those who can write in cursive. Their penmanship may better than mine, but my writing is my own, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

:D

Because most forms of reading material are 'printed' in print, it is important that children learn, first, to recognize these characters. Learning to read print-characters is facilitated by learning to write using print-characters.
As a dyslexic, I find that documents written in cursive script can be read more quickly and more accurately.
