But I am VERY, VERY happy I learned ALL of those things! And why do I have to take a speaking class in college?

I believe teachers should spend more time on basic grammar principles than on messy handwriting. Also, individual writing style says little to nothing about personal intelligence or creativity, just that one’s penmanship may be a little eccentric. The teaching of cursive to our young people, unlike math or history, does not directly teach them problem solving or the use of logic. If anything, cursive teaches our children to give up, as seen in the 85% of students who do so immediately. Cursive may be whimsical, but this does not make it a necessary tool for young people’s lives. However, the fine arts, math, science, history, english, and the understanding of a foreign language are. Learning cursive is not “bad” for kids, it just is not necessary.

My great-grandfather wrote beautiful calligraphy, and I must say, I was a little jealous of that. I am, sadly, not jealous of those who can write in cursive. Their penmanship may better than mine, but my writing is my own, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
