Using the Upside down Pyramid Technique in Copywriting

Remember learning about the upside down triangle, or inverted triangle, in high school? Well, it turns out that it also comes in handy as a copywriting technique for your business. When developing your copy, keep the upside down triangle in mind. It helps you grab your audience’s attention right away so you don’t lose them before getting to the point. Make sure to answer the questions, who what, when, where and why.

The triangle’s base contains the most important information

The upside down triangle has the tip pointing down and the base, which is the widest point, is at the top. Here’s where you start. The most important information should appear in the beginning of your copy. Start with a summary detailing what you plan to discuss. Keep your copy interesting because it will let your readers know whether or not they want to continue reading.

Going down…

After including the main points of your copy at the beginning, start filling in the details answering the “what’s in it for me” question for your readers. Discuss any background information, testimonials, reports and studies that support the main point of your copy.

More copywriting tips

Keep your writing as easy to read as possible. That means using copywriting techniques like:
• Writing in short sentences and paragraphs
• Using catchy headlines and sub-headlines
• Using bullet points
• Writing in plain English, avoiding technical terms
