I’ve been thinking a lot lately (OK…I am always thinking about this kind of stuff) about what success really means to me.

I speak for myself, of course, when I say that success is largely defined by this one word: CHOICE.

To me, success has a lot to do with freedom. Freedom is about CHOICE.

Relationship building…and building…and building

Building relationships within the context of your business take many things, not least of all:

  • Consistency: One phone call, e-mail or project does not a relationship make.  
  • Sincerity: Let’s put it this way: insincerity can be spotted a mile away!
  • Building (not burning) bridges: Today may not be the day you and someone else make it happen, but you should always be building, preparing and developing the business land for future positive and profitable harvests.
  • Courage: It’s not always easy to “put yourself out there” in business. But as they say (and as I try to remind myself): Feel the fear and do it anyway. Sticking with what you know is appealing, but not always the clearest road to success. Get out of your comfort zone!

What’s in a business relationship?

If you receive the Get It In Writing newsletter, you likely have noticed that each issue ends with what I think is a particularly inspirational quote. In fact, many times I first find the quote and then build my topic of the week around that quote.

In a recent issue, the quote, by John D. Rockefeller read like this: “A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.”

And although I am much better today at managing this type of anxiety than in years past, I must admit that I still do have a few sleepless nights from time to time.

It’s not easy (actually, it is downright difficult) to walk away from something, whether in business or even in your personal life, that is just not working. Sometimes we actually put MORE (effort, money, time) into it knowing full well that it is going nowhere fast.

What Summer Slowdown?

It’s inevitable. Every year, around February or March, people start anticipating a business “summer slowdown.” They’re the same folks who talk about a “slow December” starting sometime in mid-October. Then they put off doing anything of substance until mid-January because, they reason, things are dead for a good few weeks from start of the slow December. You can certainly talk a slowdown or a slow period or a lull in business into being, but why would you want to?

Just say "no" to time wasters and time stealers

I received some great advice via Jack Canfield (of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Secret fame) and his “Success Principles” e-mails.

Here is what he says about saying “no” to the nonsense that keeps us from doing what we need to do (and these are directly quoted from Mr. Canfield’s e-mail):

1.) Non-essential email such as poems, jokes and stories. Write a polite, “take-me-off-your-feel-good-list” response you can create as an email signature to reply whenever you receive these. If you are routinely copied on inner-office email that doesn’t apply to you, ask to be taken off the list.
