So in the last post I talked about my recent website research project and all the bad websites I ran into throughout the process. And it got me thinking.
What websites really need is better copy. And I don’t say that because I’m a writer.
The sad truth is that – in very general terms – the quality of web writing and copy is mediocre at best. I’m not calling for elegant prose. What I’m saying is that what your website reveals – in clear, well-placed words – influences what people think of you, your product, your company.
So I have been doing some research over the past month in preparation for a new site I will be launching. And I hate to have to say it, but there are A LOT of bad websites out there. (No I will not featuring any in particular!).
What I am going to do though is share some big time NOs NOs in case any of you are in the midst of a project or considering a site revamp.
Or Can Transparent Copywriting Create Customer Loyalty?
Transparency has rapidly become one of those copywriting buzzwords that has a malleable meaning. It can mean “honest” or “straightforward” or “clear” but what most readers are really looking for in copywriting transparency is for it to be sincere.
Remember learning about the upside down triangle, or inverted triangle, in high school? Well, it turns out that it also comes in handy as a copywriting technique for your business. When developing your copy, keep the upside down triangle in mind. It helps you grab your audience’s attention right away so you don’t lose them before getting to the point. Make sure to answer the questions, who what, when, where and why.
The triangle’s base contains the most important information
You know where you want to take your business. And you also know that Social Media, when used correctly and efficiently, is one of the best ways to get there. But it’s possible that you – and your business – are missing is the #1 most important tool in your marketing and social media plan.
And that tool is COPYWRITING.(By the way, you don’t have to be a copywriter to write good copy. But you do have to write good copy to succeed in the social media realm.)
Do you want to get your target audience’s attention?
Then you’ve got to give them the information they’re looking for and get it ranked well on the web so that they can find it.
You can have the best copy in the world, but if it isn’t indexed by the search engines, your readers won’t find it. Providing readers with optimized web copy that engages them with valuable content will keep them coming back for more.
Bullet points are an important technique often used in strong copywriting — they help increase readability and add impact.
Bullet points are typically used to draw attention to important information within headlines and sub headlines. Instead of presenting the information in long, dense paragraphs that make it hard to pick out important facts, bullet points are often short phrases used to list features so that they stand out.
Recently, Patsi Krakoff of The Blog Squad, interviewed me on the topic of content marketing. She compiled an overview of our time together and did a great job of showcasing the highlights.
Although she asked many great questions, I believe this one was especially meaningful:
What advice would you give to others in your profession about using content for marketing?
